A Celebrity Who Has Gone through Treatment and Currently Sober

It has been three years since “The Greatest Showman” star Zac Efron entered rehab for alcohol and drug addiction. Slowly, he has been starting to open up about his sobriety. He has also refrained from singing or dancing on screen. After his role in the High School Musical franchise and Hairspray, he was concerned that another musical role would typecast him.

Alcoholism and Drug Abuse

The actor reportedly overdosed in heroin before he entered rehab. His partying and drinking spiraled out of control, which lead him to quietly enroll himself in rehab in 2013 at age 25. He went to rehab twice. In 2014, it was revealed that Efron was going to Alcoholics Anonymous. It is amazing that he still remains a member of Alcoholics Anonymous to this day.

What followed was a string of success in major films. Getting to this moment in his career, it required him to get over his fears and addictions. Just like other young stars in Hollywood, Efron also battled the temptations of his fame during his early 20’s. He struggled to adjust to a life where nothing was denied to him, he was on the spotlight, and constantly had public attention. He shared that his old morning routine was to get up and Google himself. But the actor realized that living his life according other people’s pictures was not a good way for him to live his own life.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Efron said “It’s impossible to lead an honest and fulfilling life as a man and not make mistakes and ‘fess up to them when you need to. But it’s especially humiliating when they happen to be so public and so scrutinized.” He sounded mature and appeared to have come to grips with the trials and obstacles during his youth.

New Lifestyle and Opportunities

Being sober has greatly helped him with his career. Many former child stars struggle to come back to the scene and restore their credibility as actors. But Efron, focused and driven, managed to work on box office hits with some of the movie industry’s biggest names. He recently starred with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson on the “Baywatch” movie and previously played as the star fraternity member in “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” with Seth Rogen.

Aside from acting, he has also set his focus on exercising and getting back on hobbies and activities that he loved the most, such as skateboarding and surfing. The actor has managed to replace substances with exercise. Efron said that his new lifestyle is the product of balancing the opposites, or simply put it “You get what you put in,” proving that life does get better after treatment.

As he continues to walk on a better path in his career, he attempts to enter another level by playing convicted serial killer Ted Bundy in the movie “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.” The film will be directed by Oscar-nominated Joe Berlinger. This is a good sign for Efron as it shows that he has finally shaken off the child star stereotype as he takes on this dark and complex role.
