Benefits of Pets in Recovery

It is widely known that pets are beneficial to humans. Aside from being cute and being a form of stress relief, pets have already become a way for people undergoing rehab to improve their lives. This is what you call pet therapy.

Pet therapy can be done by having pets alongside your recovery stage or doing activities with pets. For the former, pets will be part of your rehabilitation program, while the latter allows you to interact with pets when it comes to certain activities.

Here are some benefits of having pets around when you are going through rehabilitation.

1. Pets can help in stress relief.

As what was mentioned earlier, pets can offer a lot of stress relief. Simply having them around will help ease you off the stress and anxiety you’ve had the whole day. This is because pets are naturally cute and playful that interacting with them will help you forget about your woes even for a short time. It also helps calm you down whenever you feel that you are on the verge of throwing a fit.

2. Pets simply make you smile.

Whether it’s a dog, a cat, or a fish, taking care and playing with your pets will increase the times that you smile. It is no joke that laughter is the best medicine and that there are cases where continuous joyful moments can help a person to recover. The more you smile with and to your pets, the higher the chances of your mood improving. As you socialize with your pets, your brain also produces more serotonin and dopamine, the two most popular hormones that help lift a person’s mood.

3. Pets encourage you to exercise.

Another way of increasing your dopamine and serotonin levels is through exercise. When you have a pet, taking care of them, grooming them, and playing them can count as your exercise for the day. Especially when you have a dog, the odds of you running around with them would be high. The more you exercise and spend time outdoors, the better your state of mind becomes.

4. Pets can help you interact with people.

You see this in parks and in malls. When someone walks around with a dog, at least one person approaches them and asks their name and their breed. This allows you to get to know more people and to interact with them too. There are also organizations for pet lovers where you can spend your time in instead of just staying at home.

5. Pets provide unconditional love.

Last but not the least is that pets provide unconditional love. Nothing is as loyal to you as your pets. To them, you are the most important thing in their world and sometimes, for people who are recovering, all they need is a reminder that they are loved. A little love goes a long way and when pets start to show their love for you, it is impossible to not warm up to them. Feeling their unconditional love can also help you be more motivated in terms of self-improvement and self-esteem.
